Statement of the Issue

The Ophelia Project® recognizes the harmful effects of peer aggression on youth and adults, and is committed to creating safe social climates in communities. A safe social climate is defined as one that does not accept behaviors such as taunting, exclusion, gossip, rumor spreading, or any other forms of covert aggression or bullying as normal behaviors or rites of passage.

In order to cultivate safe social climates, community members must work together to empower one another, protect and respect one another, and hold each other accountable for their actions. Students, educators, administrators, health care professionals, youth programming leaders, members of the business community, parents and other adult role models are all necessary in the successful creation of safe social climates.
